How is the HESI A2 test scored?
The HESI A2 exam is scored on a section-by-section basis, providing scores for each of the individual content areas assessed, such as Math, Reading Comprehension, Vocabulary and General Knowledge, Grammar, Biology, Chemistry, Anatomy and Physiology, and any other sections included in the test version taken by the candidate. Here's how the scoring generally works:
Individual Section Scores
-
Percentage Scores: Each section of the HESI A2 is scored independently, and test-takers receive a percentage score for each section. This percentage represents the number of questions answered correctly in that section. For example, if a candidate answers 40 out of 50 questions correctly in the Math section, they would receive a score of 80% for that section.
-
No Penalty for Wrong Answers: The HESI A2 does not penalize for wrong answers. This means that guessing is not penalized, and it's in the test-taker's best interest to answer every question.
Composite Score
-
No Overall Composite Score: Unlike some other standardized tests, the HESI A2 does not typically provide an overall composite score that combines the individual section scores. Instead, schools and programs may set specific required scores for each section.
Passing Scores
-
Varies by Program: The passing score for the HESI A2 exam varies by nursing school or healthcare program. Each institution sets its own minimum passing scores for each section of the exam. Some programs may require a minimum score in certain sections that are particularly relevant to their curriculum, while other sections might have lower or no specific score requirements.
-
Critical Thinking Scores: If the exam version includes critical thinking or other non-academic sections, these may also be scored differently and used for different purposes, such as for placement or advising, rather than for admission criteria.
Retake Policies
-
School-Specific: Retake policies for the HESI A2 can vary by institution. Some schools may allow candidates to retake the exam after a waiting period and may limit the number of retakes allowed.
Score Reporting
-
Immediate Feedback: In many cases, test-takers receive their scores immediately upon completing the exam. However, the official scores, including any detailed breakdowns or additional assessments (like learning styles or personality profiles, if included), are typically available shortly after the test day.
-
Sent to Schools: Test-takers can designate schools or programs to receive their scores directly. It's important for candidates to know the specific score requirements and retake policies of their chosen programs to plan their preparation and testing strategy effectively.
